Sascha Schneider

1870 – 1927

Rudolph Karl Alexander Schneider, commonly known as Sascha Schneider, was born on 21 September 1870 and died on 18 August 1927. He was a German painter and sculptor, who also distinguished himself as a printmaker and illustrator. Born in Saint Petersburg to German parents, he spent his early years in Switzerland before training at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1889, where he developed a style focused on Symbolist themes of heroic nudity and muscular male forms inspired by classical antiquity and physical culture. Schneider operated at the intersection of several overlapping aesthetic and cultural movements: German Symbolism, Jugendstil (Art Nouveau), and the physical culture movement known as Freikörperkultur. His work is immediately identifiable by its monumental depictions of the idealized male nude, rendered with the gravity and musculature of classical antiquity yet suffused with a dreamlike, allegorical intensity that marks it as distinctly of its era.
