Egon Schiele chooses a horizontal format and displays the subject from a top view. The posture of her wide-spread legs is mirrored in her arms folded behind her head, thus structuring the composition in two opposite, roughly symmetrical body halves. The work stands as one of the most formally resolved and emotionally charged canvases of Schiele's mature period, and one of the last major oil paintings he completed before his death in 1918 at the age of twenty-eight.
