Adeline Ravoux

Adeline Ravoux

Vincent van Gogh • 1890

Van Gogh painted three portraits of Adeline Ravoux — the twelve-or-thirteen-year-old daughter of his innkeeper — in the space of approximately one week in June 1890, barely six weeks before his death. The three form a coherent group, each exploring a slightly different compositional solution to the same subject: a young girl in a blue dress, seen in three-quarter or near-profile view against a blue ground, the entire image dominated by a chromatic intensity of blue that Adeline herself later described, with unconscious aesthetic precision, as "a Symphony in Blue."
