The Ogolo paintings represent the culmination of Enwonwu's lifelong engagement with the Onitsha-Igbo masquerade tradition and constitute, in the words of the Bonhams specialist catalogue, "the most sustained interrogation of their iconic form by any modern African artist." They are simultaneously his most personal late work — triggered by the death of his elder brother — and his most ambitious contribution to the project of articulating a postcolonial Nigerian modernist aesthetic rooted in indigenous spiritual and ceremonial tradition.
