Samson

Franz von Stuck • 1891

The Samson of 1891 is not among Stuck's most famous works — that distinction belongs inalienably to The Sin — but it occupies a crucial position within his career as a demonstration of the range, ambition, and formal intelligence that made him one of the defining figures of German Symbolism. In its treatment of the lion-wrestling episode, the painting achieves a synthesis of the Hebrew biblical tradition and the Greek mythological one that Bierbaum's remark identified with such precision: a Samson who is also a Hercules, a biblical narrative that is also a classical myth, a religious subject that is also a meditation on the human capacity for superhuman physical power. The painting's current home at the Museum Villa Stuck — the artist's own former residence, now the primary institutional guardian of his legacy — situates it within the Gesamtkunstwerk that Stuck ultimately made of his entire artistic life. His 1897–98 collaboration with architect Gabriel von Seidl on the Villa Stuck (now the Museum Villa Stuck) exemplified his Gesamtkunstwerk ambitions. To encounter Samson within the Villa Stuck is to see it in the context that Stuck himself constructed: an environment in which every object, every surface, every architectural detail was designed by the same hand and animated by the same aesthetic vision. In this context, Samson reads not as an isolated work but as one element in a comprehensive visual argument about the relationship between human aspiration, physical power, and the forces — divine, natural, and erotic — that both enable and destroy it.
