Gates of Hell

Gates of Hell

Giacomo Del Po • ca. 1703–08

Gates of Hell is an oil painting by Giacomo del Pò illustrating one of the most dramatically charged episodes in English literary history: the confrontation between Satan, Sin, and Death at the entrance to Hell in Book II of John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667). It is the only signed painting by del Pò known to survive and is one of the most significant Baroque visual interpretations of Milton's epic produced outside the English-speaking world — a testimony to the extraordinary reach of Paradise Lost through early eighteenth-century European culture, and to the ambition of a Neapolitan painter who brought the full resources of his tradition to bear on a subject drawn from the imagination of a blind English Protestant.
