The Yellow House (Dutch: Het gele huis), alternatively named The Street (Dutch: De straat), is an 1888 oil painting by the 19th-century Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. The house was the right wing of 2 Place Lamartine, Arles, France, where, on May 1, 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms. The painting is at once a cityscape, a self-portrait, a utopian manifesto, a documentary record of a vanished place, and one of the most poignant images of human longing in the history of Western art. It depicts a building that no longer exists — destroyed by an Allied bomb on 25 June 1944 — making it the painting's sole surviving testimony to the physical reality of Van Gogh's most productive and most catastrophic home.
